What does the company do?
They are a prime contractor for major warships worldwide. The Group designs, builds and equips warships , paramilitary vessels and commercial workboats. The Group also supplies electronic controls and marine equipment.
What career opportunities / training opportunities do they offer?
VT’s lifelong multi-skilling programme ensures that they do not recruit and then release the labour once the programme is complete. By equipping their employees with skills beyond shipbuilding, they can take advantage of the opportunities within the increasingly diverse VT Group or benefit the region by applying their skills elsewhere.
VT Group HR Director John Brown said: “In preparation for CVF, we could be looking to recruit up to 200 trainees a year. Starting in 2003, we began a programme to enhance the skills of our existing employees.
VT is the UK’s second biggest vocational training organisation, while their Flagship Training joint venture manages the Royal Navy’s major training establishments.
Why you want to work for this company?
VT Shipbuilding is based in Portsmouth Naval Base. This purpose built facility with state-of-the-art steel production equipment and new construction and assembly halls is amongst the most modern in the world.
VT Chief Executive Paul Lester explained: “The CVF programme is the UK’s biggest post-war naval shipbuilding project and no single yard is capable of carrying out the work. Like the Type 45 destroyer, the ship will be built in modules and we want to ensure that a significant amount of the work comes to the South Coast.
Around 1,000 new jobs will be created on the South Coast now that VT Shipbuilding has successfully secured a significant involvement in design, construction and support of the Royal Navy’s Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF).
