Construction summary

Two men on construction siteConstruction is one of Britain's largest industries and plays a critical role in Britain's prosperity both as a major employer and also by providing the infrastructure for the rest of the economy.

Whether your talent is working with your hands or your head, you can be sure there’s a place in the industry for you.  You can become a bricklayer or plasterer, civil engineer, architect or construction manager.  There are dozens of careers to choose from.

The industry is currently experiencing its greatest difficulties for a decade in meeting its demand for skills.  Many employers are reporting problems in recruiting skilled staff.

It is forecast that 76,000 new recruits will be required nationally each year to cope with the existing economic growth rate.  The greatest demand will be for carpenters, joiners, managers, electricians, clerical, bricklayers and plumbers.

The construction industry is trying to rid itself of the poor image it has and to encourage more young people into the sector by promoting the real opportunities the industry offers; namely secure and well-paid jobs.

Construction can be an exciting and rewarding career.  It offers real qualifications and real jobs in a growing industry.
