What sort of jobs can I do whilst still at school?

Thinking of doing a part-time or Saturday job while you are still at school?

No one denies that work can help young people gain skills, develop confidence and independence.

But there is cause for concern if work is unfair, dangerous, or gets in the way of education.

If you are doing any kind of paid employment your employer has a responsibility to ensure that you work within the guidance of the law.

For young people there are some very specific rules which must be followed which employers sometimes either ignore or are unaware of.

Here are some key things you should consider when looking for a part-time job:

  • The employer must request a work permit from the local council to employ you. This will involve the employer completing an application form which they and your parents must sign.  When you are offered a job ask about getting a work permit - you may not be covered by insurance without one.
  • Your employer must carry out an appropriate Risk Assessment.
  • Working before 7am or after 7pm is not allowed.
  • Saturdays and school holiday’s:
    • 13 &14 year olds can work up to 5 hours.
    • 15 & 16 year olds can work up to 8 hours.
  • Sundays 13 - 16 year olds can only work 2 hours.
  • A week during term time 13 - 16 year olds can work a maximum of 12 hours.
  • A week during school holidays:
    • 13 & 14 year olds can work a maximum of 25 hours.
    • 15 & 16 year olds can work a maximum of 35 hours.

These are just some of the rules which apply to young people of school age working.

For more information about the rules for part-time working while you are still at school email Mike Harding, Child Employment Officer or call him on 023 9220 1118 or visit the Portsmouth City Council website.
